Chip tuning is a term generally used for an intervention in the electronic engine control unit(ECU). Chip tuning has existed since the beginning of the 1990s, with the introduction of electronically controlled injection systems. Various parameters in the controller (ECU) are changed by chip tuning. The classical chip tuning consisted initially of replacing the memory chip in the control unit as these were not yet re-writable. Petrol engines were the first drive units that could be tuned in this way. Diesel-driven vehicles did not come into the chip tuning picture until the end of the 1990s. Initially, chip tuning was mostly used to change the parameters for injection and ignition. Nowadays, on the other hand, all complex data are changed in chip tuning and almost every engine that has electronic engine management can be optimised using chip tuning. The highest efficiency in chip tuning is achieved with engines that have a turbocharger or supercharger. Power increases of up to 40% can be reached here. Chip tuning with normally aspirated engines brings a power improvement of 15% at the most. In chip tuning, no structural changes are made to the engine, only the mapping for the engine control is optimised. This means that chip tuning cannot be detected from outside. In engines today, the memory chip is no longer exchanged in chip tuning. Instead, its contents are read out by means of an interface (OBD2) and overwritten.

Chiptuning = OBD-Tuning

OBD tuning is the term used today for classical chip tuning (OBD = On-Board Diagnostic). Basically, OBD tuning is purely the form of reading out used in chip tuning. Modern control units have rewritable modules that can be read out via an interface and can be flashed. Chip tuning is therefore no longer carried out by changing the memory chip.

The new parameters and mappings are loaded into the hardware. The OBD2 interface has been the standard since 2000 and all vehicles have this interface. It is used for diagnosis and updates. The tuner writes his chip tuning onto the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) via this interface. From the outside and in normal diagnostic mode, chip tuning per OBD tuning is virtually untraceable. The original data from the vehicle manufacturer are stored by the chip tuner and can be written back again if required.
Chip tuning per add-on box

Add-on control units that can be simply fitted into the vehicle have become increasingly popular in the last few years. Chip tuning per "Plug & Drive". This form of chip tuning is found mostly in modern diesel-powered vehicles with common rail or pump-metering injector engines. Modern add-on boxes work on a digital basis and communicate with the ECU. A plug-in chip tuning, so to speak.
